Brian Patrick Byrne was born on the 1st October
1929 in Dunlaoghaire near Dublin in Ireland. He was educated
at St John’s College, Waterford. On 17th June 1956 he
was ordained in Holy Trinity Cathedral Waterford by Bishop Daniel
Cohalan of Waterford and Lismore specifically for St Andrews
and Edinburgh Archdiocese in Scotland.
His first appointment in Scotland was as assistant priest at
Our Lady and St Ninian in Bannockburn near Stirling from 1956
to 1957. He was then transferred as assistant Priest to St Joseph’s
Sighthill in Edinburgh serving there from 1957 till 1958. He
had another short term placement at Our Lady of Lorretto and
St Michael in Musselburgh from 1958 to 1960 before an appointment
at St Mary’s Cathedral Edinburgh for 3 years from 1960
Fr Byrne then went to serve on the African missions from 1963
to 1965 from where he returned back to once again serve at St
Mary’s Cathedral Edinburgh from 1965 to 1969. He was then
sent on loan from St Andrews and Edinburgh to the USA where
he served as an assistant Priest in Orlando Florida for 3 years
from 1969 to 1972. He returned to Scotland once more in 1972
where upon he took up a post as assistant Priest at St Margaret’s
Dunfermline in Fife where he served until 1974.
It was in 1974 that Fr Byrne came to Kilsyth St Patrick’s
Kilsyth to serve as assistant Priest to the then Parish Priest
Fr Denis O’Connell
together with another younger assistant Priest Fr
Robert McGarrigle. Fr Byrne stayed in Kilsyth until 1976.
Thereafter Fr Byrne went to St Magdalane's Edinburgh from 1976
where he stayed for 3 years until 1979. He then assumed the
post of Chaplain at Herrit-Watt University in Edinburgh for
3 years until 1981. Fr Byrne then went to St Ninian's Bowhill
in Fife commencing in 1981.
