The Altar Staff in St Patrick's Kilsyth

The parish of St Patrick’s in Kilsyth has always had a long and generous tradition of altar servers over its proud history.

The current crop of altar staff began more formal training, (from the Director of Altar Staff, Christopher Venditozzi), on how to serve at the Lord’s table in autumn 2014, shortly after Fr Daniel Doherty assumed his post as parish priest at St Patrick’s. Like the role of the priest, being an altar server is a calling; a vocation to serve on God’s Holy Altar. This current group of approx. 25 boys and girls have shown great enthusiasm and reverence as they learn the many different roles and functions to service on the sanctuary.

The current Master of Ceremonies (MC) is Hannah Davies, and her Assistant Master of Ceremonies (AMC) is Matthew Carberry, both of whom are pupils at St Maurice’s High School, Cumbernauld.

Hannah and Matthew provide an excellent standard of service on the altar and have shown to be a fantastic example to the younger servers, (most of whom attend St Patrick’s Primary School). Recently, (November 2015), we welcomed a new group of servers to swell the ranks yet further and initially, they have shown signs that they will serve with great honour and dignity.

Archbishop Cushley visits St Patrick's Kilsyth May 2015 for Confirmations

In autumn 2015, His Grace, Archbishop Cushley, Archbishop of St Andrews and Edinburgh, gave his permission for a branch of the Archconfraternity (Guild) of St Stephen to be established in the parish of St Patrick’s, Kilsyth.

Thus at the end of the year of celebrating the parish’s 150th Anniversary on March 17, 2016, Archbishop Cushley individually enrolled each member of the altar staff into the Guild of St Stephen at a special Mass for the Feast of St Patrick. At this time, servers were presented with their Guild medal on which is inscribed, ‘Cui Servire Regnare Est’ [To serve is to reign].

Some of the duties of the altar server include:
MC duties, AMC duties, Cross-bearer, Book-bearer, Acolytes, Thurifer and Boat-bearer.

If any child in P5 or older wishes to join the altar staff of the parish, please contact the Parish Priest at pp.stpatricks@gmail.com in the first instance to express your interest.
